THE SCHUBERTIADE - SCHWARZENBERG 23 August- 1 September 2019

The Schubertiade in the wooded and mountainous region in the far west of Austria after over 40 years remains the leading lieder and chamber music festival. The combination of world-class recitals and idyllic surroundings has proved addictive for many. This year we have again selected the absolutely unmissable recitals that are given in the small modern hall in the picturesque village of Schwarzenberg, a beautiful wooden structure with ideal acoustics. Artists include singers Ian Bostridge, Andrè Schuen and Violeta Urmana, pianists Elisabeth Leonskaja and Igor Levitt, the Vienna Piano Trio and the Artemis, Jerusalem and Schumann Quartets.

We stay close by, in the village of Mellau in an award-winning 4* Superior boutique spa hotel, newly rebuilt in traditional and modern style with spacious light rooms, all with balcony and wooden floors.   The spa centre has indoor and outdoor pools, steam baths, massage etc. The peaceful setting is ideal as a base for walking and it is just a few minutes walk to the cable car up the mountain.   Dinner is at the hotel – well-known in the area for its high standard.  We will have talks on the concert programmes.

Cost : £ 3840 includes return scheduled flights, transfers, 9 nights bed and buffet breakfast in twin-bedded room with private facilities at Mellau, good tickets for 11 concerts, transfers and excursions, 9 lunches and 9 dinners. Supplement for single use of double room £ 260. Deposit £400 pp. Superior rooms with bath etc £280pp
